THREE (3)THINGS LEARNT FROM THREE (3) MINI SEMINAR EVENT

Research Committee Mini Event

One thing I’ve learned from the Research Committee’s mini event is that personal branding is essential for effective networking and creating professional opportunities. Hosted by Ms. Simone K. Walker, the session was both practical and inspiring as she emphasized that everyone—not just celebrities—has a personal brand shaped by their values, skills, and experiences. She explained how being intentional and consistent in how we present ourselves, both online and offline, helps us stand out and build meaningful connections. Ms. Walker delivered the information with clarity and energy, using real-world tips and relatable examples that encouraged us to start defining our brand now. Thanks to the Research Committee, this impactful and empowering event was made possible.

Professionalism Committee Mini Event

One thing I’ve learned from the Professionalism Committee’s mini event is that mental illness is not caused by a single factor, but rather results from a combination of biological, psychological, and social influences. The presenter, Dr. Kai A.D. Morgan, effectively communicated this information by clearly outlining the various causes and how they interact to affect an individual’s mental health. Through her engaging delivery and well-structured presentation, she emphasized the importance of early intervention, professional therapy, and supportive environments in managing mental health conditions. This mini event was both informative and eye-opening, thanks to the efforts of the Professionalism Committee.

Accounting Committee Mini Event

One thing I’ve learned from the Accounts Committee’s mini event is that Jamaica’s insolvency regime is designed not just to address financial failure, but to give honest debtors a chance at a fresh start. The presenter, Mrs. Fayola Evans Roberts, J.P., Supervisor of Insolvency, clearly explained the difference between insolvency and bankruptcy, and highlighted the various procedures available to both individuals and companies facing financial distress. She brought across the information in a practical and engaging way, using real-life scenarios and legal context to help us understand the protections offered under The Insolvency Act of 2014. This mini event was enlightening and showed how financial systems can promote fairness and rehabilitation rather than punishment.

SUMMARY OF TWO (2) CONFERENCE DAY PRESENTATIONS

Title: "Securing the Future: Data Protection and Cybersecurity in Human Resource Management”

The presentation was delivered by Khiana Chutkhan, a Senior Special Agent from the Cyber Investigation and Risk Management Unit at MOCA (Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency). It highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in Human Resource (HR) management, especially given the sensitive nature of employee data handled by HR professionals. Ms. Chutkhan emphasized the legal, technical, and ethical responsibilities that HR departments must uphold in the digital age, particularly under Jamaica’s Data Protection Act (DPA). She outlined common cybersecurity threats such as phishing, ransomware, insider threats, and social engineering, showing how HR professionals must be alert and proactive to protect organizational and personal data.

The session also covered the key principles of data protection—such as data minimization, purpose limitation, transparency, and accuracy—and outlined the distinct responsibilities and joint liabilities of data controllers and data processors. Ms. Chutkhan provided practical solutions like implementing strong passwords, limiting access, encrypting data, and educating staff. She discussed the role of technology in HR cybersecurity, including AI-driven monitoring and secure cloud-based HR tools. Importantly, she urged current and future HR professionals to serve as cybersecurity advocates within their organizations, stressing that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility. The presentation ended with a call to action and underscored MOCA’s role in bolstering Jamaica’s national cybersecurity posture.

Two things I knew before the presentation:

• HR departments handle sensitive personal and financial data that must be protected.

• Phishing and ransomware are common types of cybersecurity threats.

Two things I learned from the presentation:

• Under Jamaica’s Data Protection Act, both data controllers and data processors can be held jointly liable for breaches.

• HR plays a direct role in cybersecurity by managing secure onboarding/offboarding processes and training employees on cyber risks.

Title: The Interface of Cybersecurity and Human Behavior in the Workplace

Presenter: Mr. Dain Daley, CSM – Lumu Technologies

Mr. Dain Daley, keynote speaker from Lumu Technologies, delivered an engaging and eye-opening presentation at the HRM/AISM Seminar on March 27, 2025. His focus was on the human side of cybersecurity—how employee behavior, mindset, and company culture impact data protection. He opened by reminding us that having cybersecurity tools is not enough; we must also be intentional about how we use them. One powerful takeaway was that “data must remain as is and only be shared with proper authority,” reinforcing that mishandling information can jeopardize trust and security. Mr. Daley urged attendees to think beyond just systems and software and consider how habits and workplace culture either support or weaken security efforts. Another standout point in his talk was the staggering statistic that Jamaica experienced over 43 million cyberattacks in 2023. This, he explained, shows how aggressive and widespread cyber threats are, and why companies must take cybersecurity seriously across every department, including HR.

He also shared personal reflections that gave his message depth and relatability. A key story involving a young man who asked for wisdom instead of riches—a choice that inspired Mr. Daley to pursue a career focused on serving others through meaningful work. This linked well with his perspective on HR: a profession rooted in service, connection, and trust. He explained that HR isn’t going anywhere, even with AI on the rise, because organizations will always need real people to lead and support other people. Mr. Daley introduced the Starbucks LATTE method as a practical tool for handling issues with empathy and professionalism. He closed by emphasizing that building a secure organizational culture starts with intentional action, clear goals, and shared values. His mantra “One team, one vision” underscored the importance of unity in achieving both cybersecurity and organizational success.

Two things I knew before the presentation:

• Cybersecurity is not just about technology—it also involves people and how they behave within an organization.

• HR plays a critical role in upholding trust and confidentiality by safeguarding sensitive employee data.

Two things I learnt from the presentation:

• Jamaica experienced over 43 million cyberattacks in 2023, highlighting the urgent need for stronger, organization-wide cybersecurity practices.

• The Starbucks LATTE method can be applied in the workplace to address issues with empathy, professionalism, and consistency.
